Business Development Manager

Job summary

Responsible for establishing publishing related activities in the region through market intelligence gathering, key customer calling and partnership broking in new market.

The nature and type of activity to be pursued included:

·       Seek partnerships with top ranking universities in China and other key markets in the Far East and develope network of links with important contacts in the leading scientific institutions and the government.

·       Support the engagement of existing business activities such as language rights for the IET Journal and Book portfolio and content licensing.

·       Support the co-sponsorships of events.

·       Undertake new activities and initiatives such as author service to help establish the IET's reputationin China as a leading engineering publisher.

·       Heighten profile of IETproducts and services with key decision makers.

·       Provide regular reports on corporate market requirements for new products and services.

Main duties and responsibilities: (not necessarily in priority order)

Develop partnerships and Content Development

·       Undertake a regular research and identify list of high level institutions( universities, Learned Societies, industry and government ) with partnership potential including launches of new journals, and co-publication of existing titles.

·       Maintain a data base of main contacts.

·       Collaborate closely with Publisher -Journals on the Development Strategy for IET Journal portfolio and generate submissions from high-profile Chinese authors.

·       Provide a regular feedback on potential new Editorial Board members from China/Asia Pacific. With Publisher-Journals manage relationships with publishing partners.

·       Seek opportunities to raise the profile of the IET's publishing program in China.

Line Management Duties

Line management responsibility for Research Engagement Manager Conferences

·       Work with the teams in the UK and China offices on developing a program of high-quality IET journal-branded conferences in China

·       Secure publication rights and manage the quality of co-sponsored and third party conference content

Content Licensing and distribution

·       Work with commercial colleagues on securing industrial or academic sponsorship for IET publishing products

·       Stimulate translationdeals of IET journal and book content via China publishing houses

·       Content licensing toconsortia/organizations regional redistribution (eg for teaching, Inspecfor patents)

Author services

·       Conduct publishing seminars in Chinese universities (Academic Affiliate Program) to gain access to unaffiliated partners and expand network of contacts.

·       Establish author needs interms of language and paper content editing and propose services for supply

Improve brand awareness and market feedback

·       Liaise with Beijing office to co-ordinate marketing campaigns in China (cross-product)

·       Establish feedback mechanisms for new product/service offerings from academic/corporate users

·       Conduct research into Chinese end-user requirements and how the IET could meet these

Knowledge and training

·       Improve the knowledgetransfer and training between the UK and Beijing offices (on products, KPIs, local submissions, Manuscript Central) .

·       To represent IET/Inspec professionallyin all interactions.

·       To undertake any otherduties or projects as agreed by manager.

·       To be familiar with theHealth and Safety and Fire policies for the organization and to attendmandatory updates as required.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

·       Editorial experience within academic, corporate, and government markets.

·       Excellent relationship building and networking skills.

·       Knowledge of academic publishing markets in China/Asia Pacific.

·       Marketing or commercial experience within the China publishing market.

·       Excellent communication, presentation, written and negotiation skills.

·       Excellent command of English and fluency in Mandarin language (and Cantonese if appropriate).

·       Flexibility and ability totravel as needed.

·       Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to work to deadlines, prioritize effectively and manage own workload with minimal supervision.

·       A good understanding of digital publishing platforms and awareness of needs of information professionals.

·       Commercial experience with subscription based products.
